Radon: an invisible radioactive gas that deserves your attention!

Radon is a natural, colorless, odorless and tasteless radioactive gas that can pose risks to human health when present in high levels indoors. Raising awareness about radon, carrying out regular tests and implementing preventive measures are crucial steps to minimize these risks and protect public health.

The main source of radon is the radioactive decay of elements such as uranium and thorium, which are found in various types of rock and soil. As these elements decay, they release radon into the environment, accumulating in confined spaces such as houses and buildings.

When inhaled by humans, it breaks down into radioactive particles that can damage lung tissue and increase the risk of lung cancer, especially in smokers.

Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Portugal after smoking!

It is advisable to take corrective measures to reduce exposure to this gas and protect public health, such as installing ventilation systems or basement ventilation and carrying out regular radon tests in homes and workplaces. For specific geographical areas with high natural levels of radon, the authorities can implement building regulations that include preventative measures.

According to Decree-Law 108/2018, employers are obliged to assess workers’ exposure to radon. The way to identify situations in which workers are exposed to radon inside buildings is through detection/measurement, which, for the sake of control and quality assurance, should be carried out by companies certified for this type of monitoring.
